What Are Crowns?
A crown is an artificial structure that covers a decayed or damaged natural tooth. Crowns provide attractive and fully functional replacements for compromised teeth.
Dentists place crowns when the natural tooth structure cannot function independently. Crowns are frequently employed when a tooth receives a root canal or when the upper part of the tooth is excessively decayed and cannot receive a filling.
To place a crown, the dentist must first prepare the tooth surface. The dentist must remove decay and reshape the tooth for a functional and aesthetically pleasing replacement.
The dentist creates a temporary crown that covers the exposed tooth while the measurements travel to the dental lab. When the crown returns from the lab, the dentist permanently cements it to the original tooth.
Benefits of Crowns
- Provides an attractive replacement for a damaged tooth
- Relieves dental pain
- Patients can chew, talk, and eat normally
- Long-lasting
- Easy care
- Saves natural teeth from extraction
Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Crowns?
You may be a good candidate for a crown if you have a broken, damaged, or heavily decayed tooth. Your dentist will thoroughly examine the tooth in question and judge whether a crown or another restoration is appropriate. In some cases, the tooth may need extraction. If a crown is impractical, a bridge, denture, or implant will replace the tooth.
